Once Upon a Time

Posted by: bkksoul on: February 14, 2007

Once upon a time, six girls decided to document their last two years of high school in a book. They gave the book a name — Matthew Derek, aka Maderek — since they had a crazy habit of nicknaming everything and everyone in their lives, most notably their crushes, whose names were so totally random they ranged from Orange and Pharoah to Python/Snake and Sneeze.

But mostly they named the book for other more important purposes; after all, what better way to catch a boy’s attention than to sidle past his locker and go, “Oh, Arwen, by the way, did you meet up with Matthew last weekend?” or maybe, “Wow, Caro, three whole hours last night with Derek? I’m impressed!”

Some might think this to be downright demented, but the girls thought they were so incredibly clever. You know how it is — tomato, to-mah-to.

The book was sacred. In it, the girls jotted down their hopes, their fears, and more embarrassing moments than should be considered legal; unfortunately, eight years on, many of those moments still make the girls blush. Which is why they still guard it with their lives, even to this day.

Everything You (Didn’t) Want to Know About Me

Posted by: bkksoul on: January 24, 2007

Bua tagged me ages ago, so without further ado, here I go!

~*~

6 WEIRD THINGS ABOUT ME:

  1. Unlike the rest of the world (and my favorite Gilmore girls, Lorelai and Rory), I absolutely cannot stand coffee. Just the thought of drinking it makes me want to hurl. Dude, just TYPING about thinking of drinking coffee makes me want to hurl. This is why, whenever I hang at Starbucks or any random cafe, I usually go for some hot chocolate, iced tea, or a chilly frappuccino instead. Weirdly enough, I actually like the smell of coffee verra much, though. Not so sure why, but one possible reason could be because it reminds me of my dad; one of my earliest memories is of him reading to me with a cup of steaming hot java in his left hand.
  2. I have a great fascination for the Regency era, whether it be fashion, literature (hello, Jane Austen), architecture, art, anything. Of course, despite my great love for all things Regency, this doesn’t mean I’d like to be transplanted to the 1820’s; I don’t want to drop dead from smallpox or implode from wearing a corset, thank you very much.
  3. Sure, malls are great places to shoe-$hop, but for me, they’re also excellent places to people-watch.

Four Weddings (But No Funeral)

Posted by: bkksoul on: January 13, 2007

I tell ya, nothing quite as surreal as attending a wedding at the same hotel your senior prom was held at way back in 2000 (except, back then, before it was taken over by yet another international hotel conglomerate, it was called Le Royal Meridien). Walking into the grand ballroom was definitely very weird because all I could seem to think was, “Damn, has it really been seven years since high school?!”

RIS Class of 2000 Senior Committee
Back (from L-R): Ahn, Nid, Kay, Kenna, Jup, Tweet, JT, Kanchi, ME!, Reshma
Middle (L-R): Mr. Frank Carolan, Sunny, Praveen, Pam
Front: (from L-R): Yujin, Manesh, John, Paul, Pete, Bing

Man. Look at how innocent we all look! All freshly hatched and shiny and ready to take on the world. Scary to think that in three years time that seven years I was talking about earlier will morph into a full decade. A decade! Since when do I start talking about time in terms of decades?!

Better Than Sex

Posted by: bkksoul on: January 8, 2007

Hah, admit it — that totally caught your attention, didn’t it? It sure did catch ours. :) But I’m getting ahead of myself, so I’ll start at the very beginning, that being a lazy Saturday evening at High Tea, a cozy little tea house/bakery found snuggled deep in the middle of Langsuan Road.

A snug little haven smack in the middle of the city

A Taste

Posted by: bkksoul on: January 4, 2007

I have yet to get official verification on this, but my brother just told me that his organic chem teacher told the class an hour ago that his friend phoned to say that a bomb just went off at 5 pm at Major Cineplex Rangsit. That’s about ten minutes from my university and a favorite stomping ground where we sometimes go to catch flicks after exams.

I’m supposed to meet up with Gug, Jup, and Akira after class this Saturday, but we have a bit of a problem — we don’t know where exactly to meet up. Normally it’d be either Paragon, Emporium, Central, Siam Square, or any other of our usual haunts.  But now?  Not so much.  We’ll probably end up finding a low-key restaurant or cafe to hang out at instead.

I don’t want this sudden onslaught of terror to dictate how I live my life, but there is, after all, a clear line between brazenness and sheer stupidity. As much as I want to go about things like normal, I can’t ignore the fact that undetonated bombs and threats are rapidly sprouting across the city every day like pirated CD vendors at Pantip Plaza. Every corner of the city is up for grabs — elementary schools, supermarkets, department stores, you name it. Right now, I’m thinking I’d rather err on the side of precaution than end up tangled in the middle of a blast somewhere.

Happy New Year???

Posted by: bkksoul on: January 1, 2007

Last night, I returned to my hotel room after a lovely new year’s eve countdown, only to discover that eight bombs had ripped through the ‘Kok. This evening, I returned to the city (two days early, but that’s because I have an exam on the 3rd — God, talk about depressing — and also because nobody was feeling so festive anymore) and stopped by Spasso for dinner, only to flinch at the wreckage that lay strewn in front of Central World Plaza. And just now, as I was walking from my car, a flurry of firecrackers exploded above me and I jumped a little, if not from fear then from surprise. Most people gave a little laugh then continued on their way, but I also noticed how everyone made sure to steer clear of the trash cans…

Happy new year? I sure do hope so.

It’s Not Christmas…

Posted by: bkksoul on: December 25, 2006

Until I hear Hanson’s Merry Christmas, Baby while shopping. Nothing quite like the familiar crack of Taylor’s pre-pubescent voice (eight years on and it still makes me go, “whoa, puberty”) to remind you what time of year it is. How sad is it that I actually lingered around a few minutes longer just so I could hear the entire song?

But yes, Christmas is here!!! And because it doesn’t coincide with midterms (unlike last year), my dad and I were actually able to go to midnight mass tonight at Holy Redeemer, my high school’s old namesake and also where my parents got hitched back in ‘78. I guess this is why I’ve always been so fond of this particular church, even if I don’t *cough* attend as often as I’d like to. Hopefully this won’t deter God from looking deep within his heart and considering my little plea bargain to please oh please help magically rearrange the answers on my dental anatomy exam in exchange for twenty Hail Maries and a promise to go to church more often once I move to my shiny pink arrow as I’ll have no more excuses to dole out since it’s literally ten minutes away from said church. What can I say? It was the Catholic school girl in me talking, complete with pressed white polo and pleated plaid skirt. Ten years of that kind of tortu– I mean, excellent education will burrow the guilt in you like nothing else.

I keed, I keed. I don’t talk about religion much here, but there’s no denying it played a significant part in my upbringing — and midnight mass tonight reminded me of that. Speaking of which, mass was beautiful, to say the least. Everyone was giving off fuzzy, warm vibes and it was impossible to be a Grinch, no matter how much you might want to grumble at the holiday season. Tonight’s mass basically stripped away the commercialized parade Christmas tends to get morphed into this time of year and brought things back to basics. Oh, and the choir? Fan-freaking-tastic. I was totally blown away by their gorgeous performance. Seriously made the night that much more fabulous.

Afterward, my dad and I wandered the city ’til 2 in the morning. Hate to be a walking cliche, but because of the lights, holiday ambiance, and fab weather, the city truly did take on a magical kind of light; the kind of light that transcends all the glittering, blinding, fluorescent lights of Soi Cowboy AND Patpong combined. Yes, people, it was that magical.

Holy Redeemer was packed, so we decided to park at the Conrad and walk over.
Not that we could complain — the weather was beyond fantastic.

DONE!

Posted by: bkksoul on: December 22, 2006

Thanks to minimal sleep and the flu I caught last week, my throat is on fire and my eyes are drier than the Sahara. But all is good, because the week from hell? C’est finis!

A tout a l’heure, suckas!
(Well, until after the new year, that is.)

Winter

Posted by: bkksoul on: December 20, 2006

One of the things I love best about this time of year is that when “winter” blows into town the mechanical drone of the air-conditioners disappear, the windows burst open, and lo and behold, will you take a whiff of that? Nothing but cool, crisp air all around you!

Well, as cool and crisp as you can possibly get in tropical, vehicle-congested Bangkok, that is.

But when you live in the suburbs of the ‘Kok, your winter air actually IS a little crisper. And when you sit outside on your balcony and look out over the lake, you can almost fool yourself into thinking that maybe, just maybe, you’re not in one of the hottest tropical countries in the world but in, oh, I don’t know, some lakeside hideout in the south of France or whatever.

So you sit back with your dental anatomy book in hand and kick your feet up. Feel that cool breeze! Feel that luscious sunshiney warmth! For two precious weeks of the year, you don’t shy away from it; instead, that glorious ball of warmth is actually…pleasant. And not the festering bearer of untolerable, stifling heat it normally is.

You start reading about permanent mandibular lateral incisors and smile. Tres chaude! In more ways than one.

Dental School is No Joke :(

Posted by: bkksoul on: December 15, 2006

My midterm exam schedule next week:

  • Monday: Histology lab
  • Tuesday: Neuroanatomy
  • Wednesday: Physiology
  • Thursday: Dental anatomy
  • Friday: Oral histology + Neuroanatomy lab

Such is the sad existence of my life…well, only this semester, at least (one can hope). Right now, the only thing keeping me from ripping my hair out is the notion that I will be leaving on the 28th for one blissful week of sun, sand, and surf, as everyone knows hairless, bald pics on the beach are not hot. Well, unless you’re Wentworth Miller, then in that case you could, like, roll around in a pit full of mud and still you would look fine.
